I went on a five hour bike ride up the canyon to break in my new bike and get a view of a peak I have been wanting to climb.  I figured three hours to the false summit and another two hours to the summit itself.  I set out the next afternoon with a very light pack and hopes of sleeping near the summit.  After six hours I reached the false summit and saw the actual peak way off in the distance.   I climbed until midnight and finally reached the summit after two hours of steep climbing the next day.  The half kilo of trail mix that I carried was just barely enough fuel to drag myself back down.

I ran into a bunch of blokes with a BIG red truck on my way back to town who offered me a meal.  The truck started in England and worked its way to South Africa then crossed the Atlantic to Buenos Aires.  They drove south to Punta Arenas and then headed north.  They will be in the US by June and in Alaska by September after which they drive to the Himalayas and eventually back to England.  They are die hard climbers that seek to climb all over the planet.  Check out www.hotrockglobalchallenge.com
